Untitled: 3D Studio, Photoshop

This image was my final project for a 3D Studio course.  We were allowed to do pretty much anything, and I can’t really say why it was I chose to do this scene, but I put a lot of time and effort into realizing this simple quiet image.  Part of the reason for the serenity of the subject matter had to do with my professor, who has very particular taste and biases that I was hoping to cater to.  I also wanted to experiment with lighting and final gather global illumination (which I have since learned to do quite a bit more successfully).

One of the aspects I was most pleased with are the colored light cast through the window glass onto the cabinets, which took me a while to get to work as I had imagined it in my mind.  I also like the slight hint of intrigue of the deep red cup in behind the slightly ajar cabinet door.  I added it intentionally (as well as the pair of glasses) to add a bit of an element of narrative to the image.

Probably my biggest success on this project was the procedural material I created for the worn paint.  I used a variant of it on the window, but it can be seen best on the cabinets hilighted in the above image.  There is a wood grain base with paint that looks like its wearing thin in some places and was applied too thickly in others.  The procedurally generated cracks and blisters in the paint add that final essence of the natural organic feel of weathered paint.
